Five Secrets to Health
by Robin Peglow, M.A., H.H.C.

Everyone is looking for the “magic pill”, the one fix that will give us greater energy, better sleep, fewer illnesses, weight-loss. Here it is. Simple, affordable, and no prescription needed with terrific side-affects.

You Are What You Eat
Overused phrase? Perhaps. True? Entirely.

The food you eat is chewed, ingested, absorbed into your blood stream and essentially creates your cells. Your cells form your muscles, organs and skin. Foods that lack energy, create low energy. What do you imagine has more energy, a bag of potato chips or a bowl of fruit?

Foods that are alive, fresh and “clean” create health on more than just a vitamin and mineral level. It is cellular. Shifting your food can change your entire life.

Recently a client of mine had some interesting breakthroughs. He wanted to fine-tune his body and drop the last couple pounds to perform at a higher level athletically. This happened, but what he didn’t expect was a boost in energy, clearer thinking, a more balanced, positive mood, and relating to people differently.

1. Increase Awareness of YOUR Body
Most important, perhaps, is awareness. Intellectually you may know everything about food from textbook, “bad” foods, “good” foods. Until you test them for yourself, however, it doesn’t really matter what a book says.

Every body is different. Books and special diets may lend insight, but in the end, your body is an independent entity that functions its own way. Play with food, add new foods, leave some out and see how you feel. Your biggest teacher is simply experience and experiments, not diet-deprivation.

2. Drink Up!
Did you know that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated? Mild dehydration slows down the body’s metabolism. 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy, short-term memory. Often we think we are hungry and it is actually dehydration. Drink water.

To estimate YOUR daily amount of water in ounces, divide your body weight in half. If you weigh 180 pounds, drink about 90 ounces of water. More than you thought? If you are an athlete or live in a dry climate you may need more!

3. Eat “Lively” Foods
If a home-cooked meal means a microwaveable dinner or Boston Market, take notice! For one of the most affluent countries in the world, our cancer and heart disease rates are higher than “impoverished” countries. Why?

Packaged, processed foods fall short. They are high on flavor, but low on essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Vitamins, minerals, and nutrients support muscle development, brain function, nervous system, moods, metabolism and more.

By increasing your number of fresh vegetables (especially dark leafy greens like spinach, kale, collards), fruits, and whole grains (like brown rice, millet, quinoa, buckwheat), your energy and vitality will increase exponentially.

4. Honor Your Body
Working 60+ hours a week? Eating, sometimes? On the run? Sleeping 4- 5 hours a night?

You are not a machine. Eventually it shows up.

Did you know that only 5-10% of all cancers are linked to an inherited, genetic mutation; 70-80% of cancers are linked to diet and other behavioral factors?

This is your ONE BODY and your ONE LIFE. If you could choose strong immune function and high energy, wouldn’t you?

Are you listening to your body? The aches, pains, digestive troubles, gas, fatigue, irritability, moodiness? What is your body saying and how long before you listen?

5. Rally Support
Support promotes success. It is not about willpower and facing it alone. It is about building a support system for yourself, eliminating the negatives and people who like to sabotage. Friends, family, co-workers — all can be allies. Invite them to join you or at least encourage you. Tell them how they can best help you.

What can you expect if you follow these secrets? Increased immune function, more energy, clearer thinking, increased efficiency, and improved sleep to name a few.

A Final Note
It is never too late to begin renewing your body.
The soft tissues of your body are made new approximately every three months.
Your entire blood stream is replenished in four months.
Your bone cells are replenished each year.
Every seven years, virtually your entire body is recreated.
