Re-creating Your Life-Part two

Get to know you
The better you know yourself, the more you can consciously craft your new life. Who are you? What do you believe; what are your values; what are your strengths and weaknesses; what qualities cause you or others pain; how are your holding yourself back; what do you love to do; what are you doing out of obligation or boredom; what has been left unsaid; who might you need to forgive or apologize to; what brings you joy; how do you connect with your sense of spirit; where are you in your health; what makes you happy?
Most of you know I’m the queen of questions…love pondering the big questions. I believe that when we take the time to ask and answer the big questions, the difficult questions, we get big answers. You might finally get honest with yourself about something you’ve tried not to face. Well face it and accept this part of you/ your life. It doesn’t have to be the feature presentation, but by ignoring a part of you is another way of pretending to be someone you are not. Know thyself.
To know thyself often requires spending some time alone. Eek. Being alone is a frequent fear. How might you release the fear and embrace the time alone? Relish and delight in it? Sit down. Be still. Ask the big questions and get to know who you are and what’s in your heart.
Embracing your potential
What are you capable of achieving and being in your life? What potential lies within you in terms of who you are and could become? How do you want to “show up” in your relationships, job, with your family?
You know your potential better than anyone. Deep down, you know, whether you acknowledge it or not, if you are selling yourself short, living with “pretty good” or just “getting by.” Why not step into greatness, your best self, your truest heart, your greatest skills…to follow your passion and resist the mediocre? (You know when and where you are doing it …I know you know!) Reach for your bigger vision of yourself and your life.
Be in integrity with your word, your actions. Align with your desires. You can either fill your needs first and then release the mediocre, (i.e. find another job before leaving your current one) or release first to create space for your potential (release draining or outmoded relationships or commitments to be open for new ones.)
Harnessing the ego
The ego can trip us up while we are getting to know ourselves and creating the “masterpiece of self.” How others perceive us may be a greater influence than we want to admit. We’d like to think we don’t care, but don’t we? Left untamed ego can run wild, causing fear-based decisions that lack passion or inspiration, because we are afraid of failing or looking foolish. Will you die from appearing foolish? Not likely.
To harness the ego, choose to become aware of your thoughts and interrupt the ones that are self-judging or relate to what others think. Then refocus on who you are and what you want to create in your life. Don’t let your ego’s voice overpower your heart’s desire (Note: the ego’s voice can sometimes be similar to a skeptical friend or family member.)
Comparison is another way ego gets in the way—it’s a killer. You might think, “How can I be [insert age] and not have…” (Whatever that is.) Further you assign meaning to it. “Not having ‘A’ must mean … (I am not successful, I will never achieve it, etc.)”. Not true! If I’d lived from my ego and comparison, I would not have moved to Colorado to a city where I knew two people, after leaving a great job with amazing benefits and 401k plan after completing a Masters degree and a certification in areas virtually no one had heard of. Phew! And…I probably wouldn’t so happy now. Easy? No. But I followed the answers to my big questions, and I now honestly love my life.
So in this amazing time of recreating yourself, who and how do you wish to be? Enjoy the process of getting to know yourself, taking time alone, embracing the potential for yourself and your life and release that judging voice that keeps you from living your biggest, juiciest life. You truly deserve an amazing life, so what are you waiting for, go for it!
