Freedom,
Choice and Food
May 2003
Irony
A peculiar idea struck me as I walked outside this morning,
the sunshine warm on my skin, and the sky so blue I wanted
to touch it. I thought about the idea of freedom and what
it means. I realize that though we are “free”
to choose, we often make decisions that do not support us.
Choices for Life
Everyday we make choices that impact our overall lives. Often
these choices seem small and insignificant; the impact unseen
for a long time. Food is one of these seemingly small choices
that can set us up for long-term success or frustration.
Food
NOTE: I believe in eating a variety of foods
in balance and moderation. There are very few really “bad”
foods that you “should never eat” (although the
elimination of hydrogenated oils is highly recommended!)
We have created a powerful association between food and reward.
“I had such a hard day, I deserve ice cream!”
or “Let’s celebrate and go out to dinner!”
Old as time, we use food for celebration, reward, even bribery!
Unfortunately many of our current reward foods have a negative
long-term impact.
Here in the U.S., Land of Freedom, we are making some of the
most detrimental food choices in the world. We are attracted
to “taste good” foods that are ready in 3 minutes
or less, accustomed to strong flavors and spice. Ironically
these foods are nutritionally devoid and chemically synthesized
to “create” a great taste. As a result “natural
foods” (i.e. fruits and veggies) may taste bland or
seem unappealing by comparison.
It Must Be Safe
We believe that if it is on the grocery shelf, it is safe.
No, you will not die immediately if you eat a bag of Cheetos.
Though, isn’t it sort of weird how it stains your fingers
for hours? What is that?
Yes, these foods are approved by the FDA. The ingredients
are safe in the recommended serving sizes but who is measuring
the cumulative effects? What happens to all that stuff at
the end of the day, the end of the week, month, year? Where
does it go?
The body can only eliminate so much. Eventually there is a
physical result — weight gain, digestive problems, high
cholesterol, frequent illness, depression, headaches, skin
problems, heart disease, or cancer.
Statistics show that people are living longer. What did this
older generation grow up eating? Two words. Real food. They
ate locally raised fresh veggies, meats, grains, antibiotic
and hormone-free milk, homemade breads, etc. The amount of
canned, packaged, processed, boxed and bagged was limited.
Freedom through Health
Opportunity alert! We have the chance to redefine our connection
with food, to explore the long-term benefits of our choices
and find new ways to reward ourselves. We are worth it!
Want to be truly free? Be deliberate in your choices! Do not
let a busy schedule control your eating. Do not fall victim
to raging hunger from skipping lunch and eat fast food. Take
some time and plan. Take advantage of the fact that you have
access to some of the highest quality foods and products in
the world. Freedom to enjoy life longer!
Get Fresh!
Eat lively foods! Get those veggies and fruits in. Get out
of boxes and bags. Shop the outer edges of the supermarket
(fresh foods) and spend less time in the prepackaged sections.
Make your lunch a couple times a week or try new eat-out options
that offer vegetables, soups or sandwiches on whole grain
bread with lots of veggies! Not only will you be investing
in “health insurance” everyday, you will feel
better and likely save money!!
Innovative Rewards
Brainstorm new food-free rewards! Some simple options: read
a book or magazine, drink tea, take a walk break, spend time
with friends, play with pets or kids, buy a new body lotion,
play golf, rent your favorite movie, take a nap, listen to
music! These are the best treats for and investments in yourself
you can practice.
So maximize your freedom and
choose your way to a long, healthy and FRESH life!
