You Have One Life
— Healing the Whole Self
June 2001
You have ONE life. Is yours exactly the way you’d choose
it to be?
When I work with clients I keep turning the viewfinder and
have them look through lots of different angles. I ask a lot
of questions. I listen. I do not tell people what to do, I
simply serve as a guide. When information is needed, I share
what I know or resources where to get it.
Healing the Whole Self
Human beings are complex animals. We not only have physical
bodies, but also spiritual, mental, emotional presences. Due
to the increasing complexity of people’s lives, our
approach to health is changing accordingly.
We want to lose weight. A diet alone, just doesn’t work
anymore.
We get sick. We go to the doctor, wait hour, and get a prescription.
We are seeking other options.
We are tired. We are tired of working too much, sleeping too
little, trying to figure out why our energy is low, popping
pills to feel better, not having time to ourselves, eating
unconsciously or superconsciously –trying to take off
those pounds. We are tired of juggling all of life’s
challenges and wish it could change.
While writing my Master’s thesis on the Transfer of
Learning, I explored the components of change. Essentially
I looked at what elements were necessary to make a lasting,
impactful change while shifting from the “classroom”
to one’s actual life. Until recently I didn’t
feel I had the whole story. Now I can see the missing links.
Holistic Health Counseling is the Link
There are many variations to this . . . if you are curious
about what is included in the Holistic Health category, simply
do an on-line search for Holistic Health and you will find
everything from Acupuncture to Yoga. The key to Holistic Health
is incorporating elements from many areas, including mind,
body, spirit to create a more balanced life. This umbrella
of mind, body, spirit allows us to simplify what we are talking
about.
When working with my clients as a Holistic Health Counselor,
I help them unearth their needs, wants and life goals. I begin
with nutrition . . . exposure to new foods, energetic properties
of foods, potential food sensitivities, how to avoid that
3pm energy crash. Then I move on to other areas, be it stress,
fitness, finances, though always keeping a finger on the nutrition
pulse.
Since nutrition is home base for my practice, I can see how
it affects my clients. With a cleaner diet (less artificial/processed,
more vitamins and minerals from food sources, “whole”
foods), clients experience physical, mental and emotional
changes.
Amazed myself, when I modified my foods, I experienced a dramatic
shift in my entire life. I can finally see that what I put
in my body becomes who I am. If I eat loads of sugar, I am
the “high and low” me. If I eat lots of processed
foods, I am the no-energy me, having eaten foods that are
no longer “lively”.
While pivoting around whole foods, I play with whatever my
clients need. I come to their space and meet their needs.
Gone are the times of a set diet that works for everyone.
After all, if you are different externally from every other
person on the planet, wouldn’t it make sense that inside
you is different too? Everything is “custom” designed
these days, why shouldn’t your approach to your health
and your life also be custom designed? I explore yoga, meditation,
breathing, massage, journaling, hiking, cooking classes, time
management, art. Recently I had begun adding in Feng Shui
for my clients who are seeking to change their home environments.
It is a Win-Win situation as I explore all the things I love,
and my client is exposed to new ways of establishing a “wholly”
healthy and balanced life.
It is a difficult career to explain when asked what exactly
I do. The best way I can describe it is that I work with the
whole person for the whole process. My goal is to help others
rediscover their living potential.
Never could I have imagined a more incredible job and journey.
